Bio
Artist Camey McGilvray creates contemporary wood, metal and wire wall sculptures and free-standing sculptures.
Born and raised on the east coast, McGilvray trained in art at the Art Students’ League and The New School in New York City and continued studies at The University of the Americas in Mexico City. Her earliest wood and metal sculptures were presented by America House, the Arts and Crafts Museum in New York City. Components for these pieces were often scavenged from the boxes and boxes of second hand machine parts and spare hardware that lined the sidewalks of Canal Street in NYC.
McGilvray’s artworks are all three dimensional constructions, with the work being built up layer by layer either from components created by McGilvray herself out of wood, metal and wire or selected from her vast collection of found material. Although she received formal training in welding, most of he other skills were learned hands on. Growing up in a family of wood workers and homebuilders, construction materials were always around as well as the opportunity to observe first hand and learn valuable skills. Although McGilvray uses mostly power tools today, some of the hand tools she cherishes and relies on are the very ones handed down by her father and grandfather.
Although McGilvray has incorporated wire into most of her wood and metal artworks, each piece in her latest series, “Wire World,” is composed entirely of heavy gauge steel wire. As in all of her work, hard edge rules and line is everything. Ideas are first rendered in simple line drawings. Visual references are abstracted, simplified and in some cases totally abandoned. Line is then translated into steel wire, welded and powder coated into three-dimensional existence. McGilvray skillfully uses the visual language of line to give life to what was once only imagined and to create a Wire World.

McGilvray currently lives and maintains an art studio in Pacific Palisades, CA.
